Strange Fruit
“Strange Fruit”
Why a pear?
“In the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, the pear tree symbolizes inner peace. The pear is a symbol of affection in many cultures. In Christianity, the pear tree frequently appears in connection with Jesus Christ and alludes to His love for mankind. It epitomizes the Christian promise of salvation and eternal life. Similarly, the ancient Chinese believed that the pear tree was a symbol of immortality.” -USAPears.org
Like the pear, graced with inner peace, African Americans have strived for prosperity. Our people have been lynched throughout history but yet we are still standing tall fighting for our rights. With the promise of eternal life through Christ, our spirit will live on regardless of what oppressors have done to us or our ancestors.
